Designer Honours Mother and Aunt with ‘Sisters’ Collection

Wesley Badajak’s LOVAS Fall/Winter 2011 is called “Sisters” which honours his mother, Manda Badanjak and aunt, Marija Vejin, both immigrants from Croatia who arrived in the mid-1970s.  The collection, which is both influenced by the decade his family came to the country as well as his Croation roots, is very lady-like, with below-the-knee skirts, texture and patterns.

As we have seen with many other collections for the upcoming season, 1970s looks are very much “on trend.”  However, unlike other lines, which are heavily influenced by the decade (which many designers are doing for the fall/winter season), Wesley decided to take a much more subtle approach.  For example, rather than flaring out at two points, his pants flare out at four, which will make the wearer appear to have legs that go on forever.  At the same time, the ribbon tie blouses are not of bright 1970s colours, but charcoal, navy, silver, Bordeaux and crimson, giving a much more sophisticated feel from a decade not exactly known for that.  In fact, you can say that there’s a bit of 1940s influence, especially in the shoulder detailing of some of the jackets.

Many of the pieces in this collection are definitely must-haves.  The silk blouses, especially the red one paired with the tweed suit and the floral jersey shift dress would make beautiful additions to any woman’s closet.  And don’t worry about the lengths on the models – they are “runway cuts” meaning that the pieces that are actually sold on the market will be a bit shorter.  No worries of mid-calf skirts for any of us who’re below 5’7″.
